Malalai Joya has lived through more and accomplished more in her 31 years than most of us could ever dream of. Growing up a refugee in Iran and Pakistan, she returned to her native Afghanistan and took the Loya Jirga, the constitutional convention, by storm at age 25, taking on both warlords and the U.S. occupation. She notes, somewhat ironically, “A lot of people have taken off the burqa at my suggestion but now I’m forced to wear it myself.”

Her book, A Woman Among Warlords: The Extraordinary Story of an Afghan Who Dared to Raise Her Voice, tells her fascinating story. She joined us this week live in the studio to talk about her life–and what she wants the U.S. to do for her country.
