Immigration reform is hardly the front page issue it was one year ago even though thousands of immigrants end up in detention centers every year. The facts on the ground haven’t changed, so where does the movement stand? And is there a real possibility for reform under Obama?
Today Roberto Lovato, Associate Editor at New America Media, Mallika Dutt, Executive Director of Breakthrough, Ravi Ragbir who spent two years in immigration detention and is a member of Families for Freedom, and Lynn Tramonte, Deputy Director of America’s Voice on the state of immigration reform.

I strongly support immigration reform, but I think the recession and, yes, the wars (from which we aren’t really bringing the troops home) mean that it is mostly dead for now. Trying to manage a free-falling economy is a full-time job in itself, and other very important issues just can’t be done at the same time.
Of course, this is also why health care/insurance reform is a must-do-now because it is intimately entwined with the economic problems of our country. Immigration, while certainly strongly connected with economic issues, is less so, by comparison. Thus, further down the road.
OT— Terry Groce currently interviewing Jeff Sharlett on the “Family,” or whatever that crazy group that owns the spooky house and counseled Sanford calls itself. Even weirder than I thought.
