“Fixing furniture”? I take exception to that characterization. The process is more like rearranging deck chairs.

It’s fixing foundations. Taken from Obama’s speech.
To quote Irasema Garza, “we have a long way to go in this country.” The roundtable guests all seem to agree. This highlights a contradiction that arises in many or most of these kinds of discussions. US thinkers and planners usually emphasize that their country, the US, is the ‘greatest’ country, has the best values in the world etc. etc. etc. Given the complexities of changing any large and old system, it would seem to be paralyzing to be stuck in this cunundrum of deep belief in one’s exceptionalness and a hope for change.
