There was dancing in the streets throughout the country last night as news of Barack Obama’s historic victory made the rounds. Forty Seven Years after the Freedom Ride Campaign to register African-American voters in the Jim Crow South, the United States has elected its first African-American president.
Today we look at the significance of Obama’s win with MANNING MARABLE, STEVE COBBLE, and MALIA LAZU. We also review the House and Senate races as well as what lies ahead for an Obama administration. Then, an interview with the Nation’s Katrina vanden Heuvel.

Not just American eyes were glued to the results last night. The entire world was tuned in. What effect do your panelists think our election could have globally in terms of breaking down racial barriers in governments throughout the world?

Speaking of celebration, I thought I heard fireworks last night. Turns out, Lower Eastsiders were shooting guns in the air. So much for gentrification.
I wonder if Katrina vanden Heuvel would be a good addition to an Obama administration as policy adviser. Seems her experience writing about issues for years and as administrating editor might be very useful.
