When the bailout finally passed last week, the bill included a lot of pork for projects that have nothing to do with rectifying the financial crisis. In this video report the American News Project looks at a group of congressmen who tried to fight the pork.
Republican congressman Steven LaTourette proposed an amendment to the bailout package on Thursday, October 2, that would have stripped the pork out of the senate's bailout bill and limited the immediate bailout to $250 billion. Paulson has said that he can use no more than $50 billion a month so why appropriate $700 billion all at once? LaTourette and more than a dozen colleagues who originally opposed the bill promised to vote for the bailout if the amendment was accepted. It was not.
Tonight on GRITtv we continue our coverage of the financial crisis and why the uprising against the bailout only went so far. We are joined by Arun Gupta, Robert Johnson, Kai Wright, and Mark Winston Griffith. You can see the full show at 8 pm.
