Are you registered to vote? Is everyone you know registered?
New voters could decide the 08 election, but in most states there are just over two weeks left to register. What can you do? In this panel we’re focusing on the change-makers. Part of what has attracted people to Obama are the ways his campaign has changed campaigning — throughout the primaries there were all sorts of new ways for regular people to participate.
Are the innovations of the spring holding in the last quarter of the year? We speak to volunteers for Barack Obama’s Presidential run to find out about strategy, outreach, voter registration, getting out the vote and whether this campaign is emblematic of a new way to practice politics.
Here to talk about their work with the Obama campaign and why they’ve gotten involved are Tate Hausman an Ohio Golden Week Organizer for Obama, Julissa Reynosa a volunteer for Obama, Benn Kireker a Field Organizer during the primaries, and Ebonie Johnson Cooper a deputy field organizer for Obama in Philadelphia. We are also joined on the phone by Robert Biko Baker, Executive Director of the League of Young Voters.
And with less than one week remaining before the execution of Troy Anthony Davis for a murder he says he did not commit, we speak to AlterNet Editor and anti-death penalty activist Liliana Segura. Davis’ case was almost entirely built on eyewitness testimony – since the trial, seven out of the nine eyewitnesses have recanted their testimony, saying that the police coerced them. There is no weapon, no DNA and no motive. To find more about the Davis case visit the Campaign to End the Death Penalty.
Finally a live performance and interview with singer/songwriter Toshi Reagon. You can check out her latest album Until We’re Done and see her live at the Highline Ballroom on September 25 in New York City.
Thanks to Jay Smooth of Ill Doctrine and Rinku Sen and the Accidental American Project for video segments in tonight’s show.
