According to national labor laws Taxi drivers are independent contractors not employees. Thus they have few rights and cannot organize. In this commentary Bhairavi Desai, Executive Director of the New York Taxi Workers Alliance, argues that taxi driver or bricklayer you’re a worker and should have basic rights. Driving a cab is dangerous.
In fact, drivers are 60 percent more likely to die than any other worker and 80 more times likely to be robbed on the job than any other worker. Most are uninsured, work 12 hour-days, and barely make a livable income. In this commentary Desai argues that all workers should have the right to organize.
