There’s an economic crisis but is capitalism itself in crisis? It certainly doesn’t appear very healthy with foreclosure rates mounting, food prices and energy costs soaring, and daily calls for taxpayers to bail out banks. And the government seems to have little in the way of solutions. As Naomi Klein, author of The Shock Doctrine says on our panel tonight, “Bush is an advertisement for the uselessness of government.” His calls for consumers to spend more along with Phil Gramm’s comment that the crisis is mental indicate a level of cognitive dissonance that we haven’t seen since, well, Hurricane Katrina. There are two worlds in this country and the schism is widening.
Here to discuss the current economic crises along with Klein are Jeff Madrick, author of The Case for Big Government, and Bhairavi Desai, Executive Director of the Taxi Workers Alliance.
And a conversation with Ethan Canin, author of America America and David Rosen, Editor in Chief of the Progressive Book Club. Canin talks about the empathy of fiction and how looking through the keyhole into other worlds can change the way we think about ourselves and about politics. He calls it a politics of generosity and says that fiction allows people to understand these other worlds. Plus some suggestions on what to read this summer.
Finally the American News Project on contract oversight in Iraq. Kellogg Brown and Root’s malfeasance leads to the death of at least 11 American soldiers. And from Pangea Day, creative ways of playing football in Mozambique. All that and more on GRITtv.

Everything is on schedule, please move along.
this is a great honor and I really enjoy naomi’s visits to these blogs and I welcome our other guests along with her
I predicted some time ago that these despots would use the “petroleum shock” as another chance to take more of the middle classes assets and redistribute those to the wealthy
I also predicted that the more this president and administration become exposed, the more brazen they will become
I remember growing up, when there was some goody in the fridge, so long as taking a littel peace could not be told I would take a litte peice, but when no matter how small you took a person could tell, then I took as much as I wanted since I would already be exposed
same thing with this administration;
we find out now that they are so defiant, even subpeona means nothing, they simply say;
“so what, we ain’t comming and there is nothing you are gonna do about it”
I mentioned on a previous thread, congress is powerless unlesss they use their power
obvious once told, yet not realized until spoke so I will say it again;
“CONGRESS IS POWERLESS IF THEY WILL NOT USE THEIR POWER”
they have n
ot jailed meyers, rove, and mukasey now claims he doesn’t even have to show up as well
and congress just gasps and does nothing
no matter the law, no matter the precidence, no matter any supreme court ruling
NO MATTER NOTHING
the president a DOES have ALL the power he claims so long as congress refuses to act
he does and no law, no court decision, NOTHING, means anything at all
and the american public now have battered wife syndrome, it is bizarre, the more he does the more he CAN get away with
we are a country under seige, this president was not elected in EITHER cycle, he was installed by the legasy of reagan and his father and he was kept in office by his friends writing the election machine codes
we are undern seige, a country overthrown in a silent coup
AND HE HAS THE POWER TO SUSPEND THE CONSTITUTION AT WILL
yes he does, he can declare ANY event a “catastrophe” and invoke his “continuity of governemt”
do NOT be surprised if we DO attack Iran and if we THEN go under martial law, suspending this constitution
these bigots and masongenists did NOT amass all this power to hand it over to a democrat, a black man or all three, thay did NOT
HANG ON TO HATS, because we are in for a rude awakening
New post at fdl
I would like to point out that cheney has a LONG history of manufacturing data so he can undermine peace, he DEFINATELY did the same thing to undermine nixon’s detante, he creats a “team b” which manufactures “proof” that does not exist and then he CLAIMS the data is genuine, EVEN THOUGH OUR REAL CIA DENIES THE CLAIM
cheney’s team b was known long before we attacked Iraq, yet we allowed this sociopath to start a war, even though we were full well warned, he did it again in Iraq and now he does it yet thrice in Iran
THIS time the cia is in FULL FORCE to raise the alarm, yet cheney will NOT BE DETERRED
even obama and clinton are discussing this as if Iran is some kind of threat IN SPITE of all proof otherwise
the following is a paste from the link I posted, it was published LONG BEFORE we invaded Iraq, yet it fell on deaf ears;
and the peice goes on, you ABSOLUTELY MUST READ THAT PEACE, your head will explode, and remember it was published BEFORE we invaded Iraw
ah, but naomi is hear, I hope she contributes live to this blog
I would like to also point out once again, I know I spoke to naomi about this in the past, that “the patriot act” is almost entireley plaguerized from HITLER’S “the enabling act” and they SURELY had that prepared FAR TOO QUICKLY for it to be original, the stark similarties between the two documents are legion.
our democrats are now on board and they actually told the president the constitution is nothing but toilet paper, “go ahead and take away the fourth amendment, go ahead and give immunitiy to crimes you don’t even know the scope”
man, we are SO under seige
Definitions required before we can enter this debate. Capitalism. Do we mean a market economy with private ownership? That definition takes us back to the beginning of the last century, when it was paired with its supposed opposite, state ownership. Not really the right concept for today. Do we mean a plutocracy? This seems more like it — links up with ‘crony capitalism’, which uses the state to redistribute wealth to the rich, both through taxes and through the perversion of regulation.
I am not going to try to produce a treatise on the fly here, but it seems to me that we are flailing in the dark until we produce some terms that are accurate and define — that is to say, they draw a circle around the concept that excludes everything we want to exclude and includes everything we want to exclude. This is hard work, but if you want to create a ‘frame’ that has power to persuade, it has to be done.
I absolutely agree with Perris on the plagiarism of the German ‘enabling act.’ No question in my mind where it came from, though it’s certainly possible that we are simply dealing with domestic fascists whos minds ran along similar tracks.
