Iran's missile tests have sparked a new foreign policy row in the U.S. presidential race, but Bush Administration officials played down the likelihood of military confrontation with Iran.

The Democratic nominee, Senator Barack Obama, who has advocated more robust diplomatic efforts with Iran, said "Now is the time to work with our friends and allies, and to pursue direct and aggressive diplomacy backed by tougher unilateral and multilateral sanctions," The Republican nominee, John McCain, said the "lines of communication are fine. Action is what's necessary."
