Nairobi 2007. 19-year-old Stella Nyawira recounts the events leading up to the Kenyan presidential election and its tragic aftermath. 1,300 dead. 350,000 displaced or homeless. A nation brought to the brink of disaster. Stella’s own story is one of deep tragedy. In the chaos of Kenya’s post-election violence she is raped by a group of partisan youths and left for dead.
Yet throughout the horror, Nyawira holds onto her dream to study journalism and become a “super-broadcaster.” Amani Noma: A Hard Peace tells the story of Kenya’s turbulent political history through the eyes of this young woman. What will be her fate and what will be the fate of the Kenyan nation?
The filmmaker, Amie Williams met Nyawira four years ago just after her brother had been stabbed to death in one of Nairobi’s most violent slums. She agreed to help Nyawira with her school fees and from that relationship A Hard Peace was born. A clip from this remarkable film, a work in progress, is this weeks featured documentary.
Stella’s story is one of many that Global Girl Media has brought to the screen. Global Girl Media is a U.S. based non-profit that gives young girls ages 11-18 the resources and support to create content that authentically reflects their lives and communities.
