Or were they something never really described in our history textbooks? A “family” that waged spiritual wars in the guise of American pursuits? The Family, written by Jeff Sharlet, recounts the story of businessmen and an immigrant preacher they followed who together built a global network of fundamentalists and achieved enormous political power. Sharlet argues that this power has been used to manipulate national and foreign policies that have preserved for generations, even now.
In Sharlet’s interview, Laura Flanders discusses his alternative views of conventional American fundamentalism. He also speaks about how American fundamentalism has impacted the economics of globalization and use of war past and present.

wow
I thought that I should post something else here. I’m a little sad that this thread got so little attention. Thank you for posting this. Dangerous people like these fundies need more light cast on them, and more people paying attention to what they’re really about.
Yes more folks should be aware of this. Of course, it is much more important to keep hammering Hillary for her refusal to ‘keep her place…’
Say, how many women are in positions of power in The Family?
All of it was interesting. But I thought the part about the Family being in favor of “top down” democracy versus Reverend Wright’s “grass roots” or “bottom up” democracy was the best part.
I think that captures the tone of today’s politics: should we continue with the ‘Father knows best’ version wherein our elected and appointed officials do what is best? Or do we return to the New England town meetings of citizen participation?
