By now most of us accept that our electoral system is in trouble. In the last two General Elections, we’ve heard a lot about illegal vote suppression, electronic malfeasance and hackable voting machines.
But what if there was a perfectly legal way to rig election results for decades at a time. And what if both parties did just that, at the expense of the American voter?
Jeff Reichert began GERRYMANDERING as an examination of a 2003 scandal in Texas. The trailer you’re about to see was greatly influenced by that research. But it soon became obvious that the story was much, much larger. The process of drawing districting lines stands at the nexus of all of our country’s greatest fundamental debates: race, partisanship, the role of the elected official, the place of the voter. And it’s not what you learnt in civics class. Take a look.
Filmmaker Jeff Reichert writes:
We’re hoping to be on the ground following the exciting California Voters FIRST redistricting reform campaign by late June. To do this, we’ll need to raise $200,000 over the next month. If you’re interested in making a contribution, please contact us via our website: www.gerrymanderingmovie.com. Thanks for watching. — Jeff Reichert
